ABSTRACT
Major characteristics of urban transport system in Nigeria were highlighted. They include over capacity, traffic congestion, predominant non-motorized modes inadequately compartmented with motorized vehicle. A vast number of urban commuters depend on public transport which is largely provided by private investors. Urban transport trends were investigated through surveys conducted in the three local government areas within the Enugu capital territory. Transport demand and modal choice factors were the essential loci. Lack of proper urban transport planning and management was implicated in persistent problems of over capacity and traffic congestion and road mishaps which urban residents and tourists encounter in Nigerian cities. Some remedial measures have been recommended so that tourists on pleasure of business trip could be provided with comfortable, convenient and fast urban transport services. Transport is an essential component of tourism.
