EFFECTS OF DIVORCE ON CHILDREN:
IMPLICATIONS FOR THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY
VICE PROVOST & LECTURER,
WEST AFRICA THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY
This paper has examined the social, psychological, emotional and physical effects of divorce on children.
There was the need to examine this topic, given the fact that in the past, most writers focused on the effect of divorce on parents. The high rate of divorce in the society also underscored the need for a careful examination of the topic.
The findings of this paper are that the major cause of single parent families is divorce. Divorce is rampant today because religious doctrine and societal NorAm that discourage divorce in difficult marriage has been liberalized. Children are at the receiving end of divorce.
This paper therefore, reviews the call for a return to “the traditional family.” The society should resist individual, legal, religious and governmental legislation that tend to undermine the traditional family.
